Ammonite and Ammolite are simple fossils, steeped in the legends of gods and saints.
Ammonites are an extinct group of marine animals that swam the oceans 65 to 70 million years ago! They had coiled shells with chambers that filled with gas and provided buoyancy and propulsion in the water.
Ammolite is an opal-like gemstone, made of ammonites, found primarily along the eastern slopes of the Rocky Mountains of North America.
The healing properties of ammonite and ammolite have been identified in stories and legends, centuries old!!!
The name ammonite comes from the ancient Egyptian god named Ammon. Pliny the Elder, a Roman naturalist from the first century, called the fossils ammonis cornua, which means the horn of Ammon. Ammon was an Egyptian god who wore curled horns on his head.
Ammonite was considered the holiest of stones because it would summon dreams of prophesy.
St. Hilda was a beloved Celtic Saint with special powers. Legend tells of a plague of snakes in Whitby. St. Hilda it is said to have turned the snakes to stone, explaining the presence of ammonite fossils on the shore at Whitby. The ammonite genus Hildoceras takes its scientific name from St. Hilda. Local artisans carved snakes’ heads onto ammonites, to sell as proof of her miracle.
In Celtic lore the snake is a symbol of birth and rebirth. The ammonites are a symbol of miracles and protection.
St Hilda is generally depicted with a pastoral staff and carrying an abbey church. Notice the ammonite at her feet in the picture below.
Hindus call ammonite stones “shaligram silas”. Literally meaning Vishnu Stones. Legend has it that shaligrams represent Lord Vishnu the preserver who was turned into stone by a woman he tried to deceive. According to ancient Sanskrit texts, the person who worships or keeps them in house or washes them and drinks the water or sprinkles it on his head becomes free from from all sin and is protected from untimely death.
Hindus treasure ammonites as spiritual stones.
In Feng Shui is believed that ammolite absorbed cosmic energy from the universe and, through the stone, it gives the owner health, wealth, and enlightenment. Added to the ancient presence is the shape of ammolite – a coil – which creates constant movement and circulation of energy, bringing a sense of stability, grounding and protection to any space. A stability that is dynamic, not stale and stagnant.
For Feng Shui, ammolite is preferred over ammonite.
